Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball allows up to 15 players on a team’s roster. However, you need between 8 and 10 players for an AAU basketball team. This is the average number of players most beginner and basic teams need to be successful.
There are two exceptions to this rule which make me suggest a higher number of players. This is typically reserved for the more advanced teams. I will talk about the criteria below but if this applies to your team then I suggest 12 to 15 basketball players on your AAU team.

There are three factors to consider when you are determining the number of players you need for your AAU basketball team. These include player rotation and development, the team chemistry, logistical considerations, and funding the team. These four factors play a significant role in determining your AAU roster size.
1. Player Rotation and Development
A smaller roster of 8 to 10 players is easier to manage. Believe me. When I first started coaching I always felt like I could get everyone a fair amount of playing time with 8 players.
The more players the tougher it was especially if the opposing team was much better. This forces the coach to keep the best ball players in the game and makes it a little more difficult to play everyone a fair amount of time. Removing play time reduces other player’s development.
2. Team Chemistry and Cohesion
A small roster can facilitate better team chemistry and cohesion. This gives players more opportunities to practice together and develop on-court synergy. Building strong interpersonal relationships and understanding each other’s playing styles are crucial elements for success in competitive environments.
3. Logistical Considerations (with small AAU basketball teams)
A smaller team size simplifies logistical arrangements, such as scheduling practices, coordinating travel plans, and managing expenses. With fewer individuals to account for, organizing team activities becomes more manageable for coaches and administrators.
Exceptions to the Rule (Number of players for AAU basketball team)
