If you are starting an AAU basketball team you will need uniforms that meet certain criteria to be eligible for tournament play. I have coached AAU and travel basketball teams for years and have experience with selecting uniforms that meet AAU’s criteria.
Purchasing uniforms that don’t meet AAU’s standards can be an expensive mistake. I have personally seen new teams show up to an AAU tournament and be disqualified for their uniforms. They will let you play but all of your wins will go to the other team.
AAU and other travel basketball programs take uniforms serious and this is why I am taking the time to write this article–to give you the facts to find the right uniforms for your team!
1. Understand AAU Basketball Guidance
The first thing you need to do is go to AAU.com and familiarize yourself with the uniform section. In case you don’t have time here is exactly what is says.
- Jerseys must have numbers on the front and back.
- The numbers you select can have 0 or 00 to 99.
- The size of the numbers must be 2 inches on the front and 4 inches on the back.
- Each player should have a light and dark jersey.
I encourage you to confirm these rules with AAU and/or check the rules for your local organization. They may be different.
2. Choose Quality Materials
You want to pick something that is comfortable for your players to wear. Look for uniforms that use a high quality material that offers moisture-wicking properties. This will keep players dry and comfortable during games.
3. Customizable Options for AAU Uniforms
Many retailers offer customization options for basketball uniforms, allowing teams to personalize their jerseys and shorts with team names, player numbers, and logos. When customizing your uniform, consider factors such as font style, color contrast, and placement to ensure optimal visibility and aesthetic appeal.
If this is a brand new team you will need to create a logo. This is really easy to do. Just check out Canva. Or you can check out Fiverr, it’s relatively inexpensive and they can do it pretty quick.
4. Sizing and Fit
Proper sizing is essential for AAU basketball uniforms to ensure freedom of movement and comfort during gameplay.
I have seen so many times when a player has a uniform that is too small or too large and the negative impact it can have on their ability to play. So lets make sure you have all of the information you need to do this right.
If this is your first time buying uniforms you have a couple of options:
- Take accurate measurements of each player and refer to sizing charts to determine the most suitable sizes and place your order.
- You can order a sampling of sizes from the manufacturer and have each player try them on. However, this will cost a little bit of money up front but is a great option.
One other quick pro tip: Kids grow quick. Pay attention to sizes and be prepared to purchase the next size before it is needed. It takes time to manufacture and ship customized uniforms.
5. Durability and Longevity of AAU Basketball Uniforms
Ok, basketball uniforms endure rigorous wear and tear throughout the season, so durability is key. Choose uniforms constructed from durable materials that can withstand frequent washing and physical activity without fading or stretching. Reinforced stitching and seam construction can also enhance the longevity of the uniform, minimizing the need for replacements.
Speaking of washing your AAU basketball uniforms. I caution you against putting them in the dryer. If you get AAU uniforms that are made from wicker like material they will dry quick! No need for the dryer. Plus they may shrink quick!
I also suggest writing on the tag of the shorts. The shorts don’t typically have numbers so you won’t know which pair belongs to which player (if you wash them between games).
I also suggest putting together a team laundry kit for overnight tournaments. The kit should include a large laundry bag, detergent, fabric softener, bleach and a marker (see above). This way you can put all of the uniforms in the bag, carry it to the laundry room and clean them.
6. How Much are AAU Basketball Uniforms
Typically I spend about $100 on each set of AAU uniforms. That doesn’t include shipping, taxes and remember the prices keep going up. Compare prices from different suppliers and explore bulk purchasing options or package deals to potentially save on costs. Keep in mind that investing in durable, high-quality uniforms can ultimately save money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements.
